Senate Bill 11, which was passed in 2005, required school districts and public junior colleges to adopt and implement a multi-hazard emergency operations plan that includes district employee training and mandatory school drills to prepare students and employees for responding to an emergency. Senior at Lehman wins speaking competition Hunter Lehman, a senior at Lehman High School, won first place in Impromptu Speaking at the Texas Association of Future Educators - Region 13 Competition. The event was held at Hutto High School on Nov. 28. Lehman will compete at the state-level competition in February. Hunter Lehman PHOTO BYJIM CULLEN Riley Stumpf wins BES spelling bee; region next After 12 rounds and 150 words, the Buda Elementary Spelling Bee contest - an officially sanctioned Scripps National Spelling Bee competition - was won by fifth-grader Riley Stumpf. With the excitement building before a crowd of classmates, parents and friends, Riley and three other competitors, Lauren Craig, Ryah Gonzalez and Jasmine Taylor, went toe-to-toe for the campus bee's closing rounds. Riley took the trophy with a final round spelling of "intricate" and "ambitious." She will represent Hays CISD at a regional spelling bee in Austin in February. Sixth graders advance to science fair BaRon Middle School's sixth-grade science classes focused on indi- vidual projects with impressive results. Twelve students qualified for the Hays CISD Middle School Science Fair at the Performing Arts Center.
