Page 2 Marketplace February 6, 2003 News From Abroad SANFORD PFC Sanford, Matthew B. graduated from Marine Recruit Training Depot in San Diego, California on January 31, 2003. His platoon, #1143 of 1 RTBN Charlie Co., won the title of Honor Platoon. After serving as Recruiter's Assistant in San Antonio, he will report Feb. 18th to the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton. PFC Sanford is the son of John and Hope Sanford of Buda. They, along with his God-parents, Margaret and Charley Billinglsey of Houston, traveled to San Diego to celebrate his graduation. DOWNING United Methodist from Kyle Honored Austin District Methodists honored Diana Downing, a member of Kyle United Methodist Church, with the 2003 Bishop's Exemplar Award for the Austin District on January 25, for "witness, commit- ment and service after the exam- ple of our Lord Jesus Christ." Downing was recognized for modeling Christian discipleship and service in a nmnber of ways in her congregation and community. Seven individuals received awards during the celebration for exemplary lay ministry. ACKMANN Stacy Ackmann of Buda, a senior management major at Texas Tech, has been named to the Dean's List at for the Fall 2002 semester. DEVILLE Rachel Deville of Buda, a music major at Texas Tech, has been named to the President's List for the Fall 2002 semester with a grade point average of 4.0. HARRISON William G. Harrison of Buda, a student at Sam Houston State University, was named to the Dean's List for Fall 2002. The Dean's List at Sam Houston consists of all full-time students having grade point averages of 3.5 and above. MERRY Lisa Merry, daughter of Margaret and Joe Merry of Wiesbaden, Germany, formerly of Mountain City, graduated with honors, CUT laude, from Southwest Texas State University in December 2002 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communication Design. She is actively pursuing a job in the field of graphic design and illus- tration and has received awards and much recognition for her portfolio work. A 1997 graduate of Hays High School, Lisa is a produc- tion assistant at the Free Press and maintains her position there by providing them with hard work, quality results, and deli- cious cookies baked from scratch. Everyone at the Free Press would like to congratulate Lisa on her accomplishments and wish her the best of luck, but we still blame her for the extra five pounds we've gained! HCISD News Bri00rfs WALK-THROUGH PLANNED AT HHS-- A walk-through of the new instructional building at Hays High School will be on Thursday, February 6, from 4-7 p.m. Architects and campus and dis- trict administration will be avail- able to answer any questions from the public about the school's new 71-classroom structure. The building is part of the bond package that was approved by voters in February 2001, under which $11 million was dedicated to improvements at Hays High School. The instruc- tional building will help allevi- ate crowding at the high school. "This is a state-of-the art, first-class, high-tech building" said HHS Principal Carl Hall. "It is the way a high school today should be to meet the needs of our students' education" WALLACE MIDDLE SCHOOL HOST CURRICULUM NIGHT-- An evening of important information for middle school students will be February 11 at 6:30 at the Wallace Gym. Information of anticipated cam- pus course offerings for the '03- '04 school year will be present- ed. Seventh and eighth grade registration sheets and grade- specific information will be available for all three Hays mid- dle schools. KUNKEL ROOM RE-DEDICATION' SET FOR FEB. S---- The Kunkel Room of Buda Elementary School will be "re- dedicated" with a reception on Saturday, February 8, at 10 a.m. The public is invited to look at the renovations of the historic room that were paid for as part of the 2001 bond package. Refreshments will be served. The Kunkel Room is named after Nolan Kunkel, who served Hays CISD, including the prin- cipal of Buda Elementary School, for 25 years. The Kunkel Room was initially ded- icated in 1994. TRANSFER APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE,--- Applications for intra-dis- trict and inter-district transfers are now available at the Central Administration building, 21003 IH 35 in Kyle. Intra-district transfers are those within the school district; inter-district transfers are those from another school district. • Deadline for transfer appli- cations is April 1. The Hays CISD Board of Trustees approved new elemen- tary school and middle school attendance zones for the 2003- 04 school year. Parents and guardians of each student in the district will receive a letter with- in the week notifying where the student will attend school next year. The district will be practic- ing an open transfer policy beginning this year: transfers will be approved unless the campus is over capacity. BOND 2003 PUBLIC HEARINGS SLATED--- Three public hearings for Hays CISD Bond 2003 are scheduled over the next three weeks at campuses throughout the district. The public hearings are designed to obtain input on the bond package that will be put to the voters on February 22, 2003. Early voting begins on February 5. On Tuesday, February 4, a hearing will be at Wallace Middle School, beginning at 6 p.m.. On Saturday, February 8, a hearing will be at Buda Elementary School's Kunkel Room beginning at 11 a.m., and on Monday, February 10, a hearing will be at Fuentes Elementary School, beginning at 6 p.m. The hearings are open to the public, and will be posted under the Texas Open Meetings Act in the case a quorum of the School Board is present.
