Hays Free Press February 13, 2013 NEIGHBORS Page 3C r SUBMI'n'ED REPORT The fourth annual Kyle/ Buda Women Democrats Empty Bowls Project will do- nate 25 percent of its profits to the Hays County Food Bank. The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Feb. 14, at the Kyle Historic City Hall. Everyone is welcome. The basic principle of the Empty Bowls Project is straightforward: craftspeople, educators and other Hays County residents work with the community to create handcrafted bowls and pre- pare a variety of homemade soups. Guests are encouraged to join in a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are encouraged to keep their bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. For a $20 donation, each guest can choose their own hand crafted bowl and from a wide variety of delicious homemade soups. There will be options for carnivores and vegans alike, along with fresh bread and cornbread. More than 100 uniquely de- signed, food-safe bowls have been created by the Texas State University ceramics program especially for the event. Bowls will be available to guests until they are all sold. Ask Chris Continued from pg. 1C Rule of thumb: a 100 foot row will adequately feed a fam- tlyof5. After harvest, asparagus is usually boiled or steamed until tender. Traditionally the spears are served with a sauce like honandaise, or served with melted butter and drizzled with parmesan cheese. This vegetable is rich in follc acid. This helps make the blood healthy and strengthens the liver. It is low in sodium and calories, has no fat or choles- terol, and is a great source of potassium and fiber. The only disease associated with asparagus plants is rust. By planting disease resistant varieties, this should not be a problem. Two varieties to look for are U.C.72 and U.C.157. Both of these will produce earl~; and are prolific. Happy gardening everyone! If you have a gardening ques- tion, send it to me via email: (Please put'Ask Chris Winslow' in the subject line.)
