In honor of the beloved children's author, many Bowie staff and students dressed as Dr. Seuss char- acters, and almost everyone wore handmade red and white striped hats, reminiscent of the iconic Cat in the Hat. Celebrity readers were on hand most of the day to read with Bowie students. In this photo, special guest Mayor Daniel Guerrero reads to a group of students. The event was to celebrate the school's decision to become a Leader in Me Lighthouse school. Nearly every child was wearing his or her "Got leaders?" t-shirt. On the back, it proclaims that grade level has leaders. For example, as shown on the student in the photo, "Kindergarten does." in BY KIM HILSENBECK kim@haysfreepress.com Last fall, the Hays Free Press profiled Elm Grove Elementary as they began the process of implementing The Leader in Me. The program incorporates Stephen Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" into the existing culture and curric- ulum of a school. Students build leadership qualities including taking re- sponsibility, working with a team, goal setting, problem solving and conflict resolution. These qualities are not just done in a few short lessons and forgotten; they are consistently integrated into the school's dal- ly activities, routines and cur- ficu]um. The goal is to have well-man- nered students who take an ac- tive role in their education to produce a campus where disci- plinary problems go down and responsib~ty goes up. Teach- ers, administrators and par- ents are all involved, modelng the behavior at school and at home. At Elm Grove, the result after just a few weeks was noticeable. Principal Kathy Faulks said she saw a huge difference in her students once they rolled out the program.
