STAFF REPORTS A grant from the St. David's Foundation will help provide low-cost dental services in the CommuniCate Health Center under construction in Kyle, CommuniCare lead- ers announced this week. The St. David's Foundation, a joint own- er of St. David's Healthcare, awarded the $852,000 grant to help fund the construc- tion of a dental wing in the 20,732-square- foot health center that is slated to open this September two miles east of IH-35 in Kyle. The clinic will provide medical, den- tal and behavioral health services to unin- sured and underserved residents in Hays County. "This grant will provide a state-of-the- art dental facility that will enable Com- muniCare to provide critically needed dental services to children, individuals and families in the Kyle area," Debbora A. Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of CommuniCare Health Centers, said in a news release. "St. David's Foundation has a great track record of helping to provide dental care at schools and clinics across Central Texas." Based in San Antonio, CommuniCare Health Centers (CCHC) had more than more than 151,000 visits in 2009 in its two health centers in San Antonio and one in San Marcos, the release said. The non-profit health centers serve those with Medicaid, Medicare, medical insurance and those that do not have in- surance, charging on a sliding-fee scale based on annual household income and family size. Construction of the Kyle clinic is fund- ed largely through a $1.447 million federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In April, 157 Hays County properties will face aucdon on the steps of the county courthouse, a scant two percent decrease from the 160 proper- ties posted in the March foreclosure sale. That's a 34 percent increase over the 117 prop- erties posted in April of 2009, and a 94 percent increase over the 81 properties listed in the same month of 2008. Every month in 2009 saw higher foreclosure listings than the same month in 2008, and 2010 is following a similar pattern. With the excep- tion of this February, which saw a slim two per- cent decrease in posfings over 2009, every other month in 2010 has seen significant increases over the year prior. Year to date, 2010 has seen 591 foreclosure postings, a 35 percent increase over the 438 for the same period in 2009. A mortgage lender can initiate foreclosure proceedings when a property owner falls three months behind on their home payments. Na- tionwide, last year's skyrocketing foreclosure levels and a melting housing market contrib- uted to overall economic decline. The paintings portray Holder's interpretation of Okeanos, the shadowy cosmic river of Greek mythology that sur- rounds the known world and borders the underworld. The exhibit runs from April 2 - 24 at the David Lusk Gallery in Memphis.
