BY KIM HILSENBECK kim@haysfreepress.com An openly gay Lehman High senior is not eligible to run for prom queen - because he's male. Coy Villasenor, 18, was re- cently told he could not run for queen. Up until just a few days ago, Coy said he thought everything was on track. On April 26, Coy said Lehman Principal Michelie Chae informed him of her deci- sion to not allow him to run for queen. Coy told Chae that he wanted the same opportur~ity to run for prom queen because he iden- tities more with being female than male. "I want to be a male who runs for the female position," he said. Coy said he talked with Hays CISD Board President VILLASENOR Willie Tenorio, who was report- edly ve~ supportive. Hays CISD spokesperson Tim Savoy did not cite a district policy on the issue. Instead, he replied with the following state- ment, "The student can run for the royal court, but only in the "king" category. Because the male student has an identical and equitable opporttmity to be on the royal court the prin- cipal's decision not to allow him to run in the queen category is appropriate and not discrimi- natory." He added, "The student did a great job of expressing his posi- tion on the matter and was very respectful." Co5 who was voted "most unpredictable" by his fellow students, disagrees with Chae's decision and said he feels dis- criminated against. "I just want the same oppor- tunity to run for queen because that's how ! express myself- as a woman," he said.
