BY MOSES LEOS III moses@haysfreepress.com As the first Mexican restau- rant in Buda, Helen's Casa Aide is no stranger to blazing a trail. While other Mexican restau- rants have made their way to the area, owner Helen Aicala and her family consistently find ways to step away from the pack. Earlier this year, the iconic restaurant continued its tradi- tion of going where no business has gone before. Casa Alde be- came the first major business in Buda to fully integrate the Square Card Reader credit card system. Square, the brainchild of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey; is a credit card reader system that attaches to a smartphone or tablet. Once attached into the device's minijack, business owners can utilize and conduct card transactions with custom- ers. Users receive the device for free, but must sign up for the fee-based service. Business owners pay either a rate of $250 per month and zero percent cost per transaction, or zero dol- lars per month and 2.75 percent per credit card transaction. The benefits are substantial. Owners can conduct business and track sales, all from their mobile devices. According to statistics on the Square website, squareup.com, 66 percent of in-store transac- tions are made with debit or credit cards. Data shows that 180 million Americans have a debit or credit card. [Square] is easy to use, it's versatile, and you don't need a lot of things to get it working," Della Fine, cashier at Shoppe said. "I've used both Square and a regular Point of Sale (POS) system. To have card payments through [a smartphone] and not a POS system is fantastic. It's portable and flexible. That's a plus for me; to use it wherever I go." Not every business owner is on board the Square bandwag- on. Hope Sanford, owner of Cimarron Rose Antiques, ob- tained Square to allow custom- ers to purchase items while she was at roadshows. However, the novelty did not catch on, as her customers were willing to pay with cash and not plastic. She attempted to use it at her shop, but found it was not a pro- dent solution. "I wanted to use it here, but it was more expensive than the one I have now," Sanford said. "[Square] charges a higher per- centage than the system I have nOW." But the big question remains: is the system safe? According to the Square website, they claim the system meets the industry standard in encryption. It also lets business owners know any information, and sales obtained are stored within a database, not in the de- vice itself. Still, Gonzales preaches vigi- lance on the part of all.
