The survey was conducted by K12 Insight, the same firm that conducted the employee and parent/community surveys. The questionnaire gathered feedback on a variety of topics that influ- ence student engagement. The survey, conducted from Feb. 16 to March 6, 2015, had an overall partic- ipation rate of 30 percent. In other words, out of a pos- sible 8,947 students who were invited to take the survey, 2,656 participated. However, a much higher per- centage of middle school stu- dents took the survey than their high school counterparts. The strongest area of engage- ment for sixth-eighth graders and upperclassmen was Self- Management: I am nice to my teacher(s). For freshmen and sophomores, their strongest area of engagement was Future Aspirations: I believe I will con- tinue my education after high school. OVERALL STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Overall engagement is deter- mined from an aggregate score across all survey items. Higher scores reflect stronger engage- ment. The District's Overall En- gagement Score was 2.89 out of 4. Middle school students who took the survey had higher en- gagement scores than their high school counterparts, with the exception of Live Oak Academy. Three schools, Barton, Wallace and Simon middle schools, had higher engagement scores than the district average. Live Oak Academy, Chapa and Dahlstrom middle schools had scores just below the district average. ;D HCISD Teachers recognized for iTunes U Work Eight Hays CISD teach- ers have been publicly recognized by the Board of Trustees for their con- tributions to the "iTunes U" project. TASKs "iTunes U" proj- ect involves teachers in developing interactive, online content for teach- ers - all of it designed to foster creativity, collabo- ration, and critical think- ing skills. Because of the honored HCISD teachers' involvement this year, an additional 16 professional development courses were added to the iTunes U library, bringing the to- tal course offering to 59. Honorees included Janet Patterson, Krista Milan, Brooke Lucio, Al- lison Gillentine, Lenicia Gordon, Tim Jacobson, Rob Cheshire and Tania Dymkowski. Wallace Middle School's WEB program, in use for many years, helps orient new students to the campus and transition from an elementary environment to the middle school world. Come the first week of school, these participants will have a true sense of belonging on their new campus and will more quickly integrate into the Ranger community: ~here Everybody Belongs -b
