He remembers 'coon' hunlLug in green pastures and the famil- iar sound of a father's whistle when it was time for a young boy to come back home before dinnertime. "I grew up in a small town where everyone pitched in. Your neighbors could discipline you just as well as your parents," Sturdivant said. Son of a former Kyle mayor, Lee Sturdivant, his son remem- bers a blood drive that com- munity members sponsored on behalf of his father at the local Baptist church. Some of the po- tential do- nors had to be turned away be- cause orga- nizers ran out of time, Sturdivant said. T h e memory of Kyle com- m u n i t y STURDIVANT members coming together to join a cause is a reminder and also a wake up call for Smrdivant. He was diagnosed with stage three mel- anoma skin cancer in March of this year. He is a cancer patient that has no medical insurance. Friends and family members have organized a benefit fund- raiser for him on Sunday, Oct. 24 at Texas Old Town Tejas Hall. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the benefit is scheduled to last until 7p.m. Activities include a silent auc- tion, raffle, music, and bar-b-que plates. Meal tickets are $7 per plate. Raffle tickets are $5 for one ticket or $20 for five tickets. Prizes for the raffle include a custom built barbecue, a $350 gift card to Academy and a homemade stained glass win- dow and jewelry. An Autumn Day quilt has also been donated to the raffle. Tickets for the quilt are priced at $5 for one ticket and $10 for three tickets. For more information on how to donate or to purchase meal or raffle tickets, contact Sandi Floria.
